HDC 4th Grade Visits Hershey Story Museum

Barbara Medina
On Wednesday, December 4, the fourth grade visited the Hershey Story Museum to launch our Food Truck Across the United States interdisciplinary project. The focus of our social studies curriculum—the regions of the United States—serves as the foundation for this unit. Each student is assigned a state, and throughout the unit, they become food truck entrepreneurs and experts in their respective states.

To provide students with real-world experience, the project began with a trip to the Hershey Story Museum, where they participated in the Sweet Strategies program. In this hands-on, team-building class, students immersed themselves in the sweet business of selling chocolate. They used real ingredients to create a new chocolate product, drew inspiration from Hershey’s marketing campaigns, and designed packaging while strategizing a campaign to sell their creations. At the end of the program, each group delivered a presentation that included their target audience, product name, ingredients and reasoning for their choices, wrapper design and label details, cost, and promotional slogan.

The fourth graders wrapped up their day by participating in the Hershey Quest. They explored “Hershey”—the man, the town, and the business—through authentic artifacts and interactive technology. Moving through five fascinating exhibits, they uncovered the many stories within The Hershey Story.
