SIP Kindergarten Explores Art and Creativity with Vincent Van Gogh-Inspired Unit

Molly Cook & Damaris Torres
As part of the new International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC), Kindergarten students in our Spanish Immersion Program (SIP) have been exploring the Imagine That! unit, which focuses on art and artists. Last week, they delved into the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh, discovering his techniques and creative process.

A highlight of the week was a visit from artist Kim Yoggy Soveron, who guided students in creating their own 'pen and ink' drawings inspired by Van Gogh’s work. They learned about different types of lines and how to use dots and strokes of varying sizes to add texture and depth.

The students were thrilled to create their own artwork, with many eagerly applying what they learned in class. One student was so inspired that she went home and created her own version of Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

Teaching through the arts helps make challenging concepts easier for young learners to understand. At SIP Kindergarten, projects like these foster creativity, develop imagination, improve hand-eye coordination, and expand students’ Spanish vocabulary. By integrating art into the curriculum, SIP Kindergarten continues to provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that inspire and engage students.
