First Graders Celebrate Peace and Global Traditions
Robyn Endress
In Robyn Endress's 1st grade class on our Historic Downtown Campus, students have embraced the spirit of the season through their "Holidays Around the World" unit. This creative and educational project highlights themes of peace, diversity, and global traditions.
The unit begins with a focus on "Peace on Earth," inspiring students to create a heartwarming bulletin board featuring "peace people" holding hands. Each drawing reflects the individuality of the children while celebrating the uniqueness of people around the world. Building on this theme, students wrote thoughtful essays exploring their reflections on what creates peace.
The U.S. section of the unit introduces students to the various gift-givers celebrated around the world, emphasizing how America’s melting pot culture blends traditions from many countries. The students’ colorful Santa pictures include conversation bubbles imagining what Santa might be saying, adding a playful and personal touch to their work.
This unit provides a meaningful way for students to explore cultural diversity and celebrate the holiday season while fostering creativity and understanding.
