HDC Community Lovefeasts for 2024-2025

Rev. Jennifer Nichols
We can’t wait to welcome you to campus for our first Lovefeast of the year on September 20! Students in grades 1-8 and faculty and staff from the Historic Downtown Campus will come together in community for this special morning, and you are invited.

A Beloved Tradition:
On the Historic Downtown Campus, the Lovefeast has been a joyful part of school life since 1742. This unique tradition, open to all, dates back to 1727 and the early Moravian community in Herrnhut, Germany. A traditional Moravian lovefeast is a worship service where a simple meal is shared. Today, Moravian Academy Lovefeasts include a joyful Chapel service where we hear a community message, share sugar cookies and apple juice, and enjoy the music of our wonderful student ensembles. (Allergy-friendly cookies are available!)

Lovefeast Mornings:
We have three family lovefeasts throughout the year, and each morning follows a similar schedule:

8:00 AM: Coffee reception for guests in the CE Auditorium
8:15 AM: Classroom visits with fun activities organized by our faculty (Guests with
more than one student will be able to visit multiple classrooms.)
9:30 AM: The Lovefeast begins in Central Moravian Church
11:00 AM: The Lovefeast concludes and guests depart campus

Who Should Attend?
There will be three family lovefeasts this year for students in grades 1-8 on the Historic Downtown Campus. We hope each student will welcome an adult guest (or two) to campus for each service. Families spend the morning together and sit together by grade, with older siblings joining their youngest sibling's class. Moravian Academy Lovefeasts are welcoming and inclusive for people of all faiths and traditions.

What to Wear:
Students in Grades 1-8 wear their formal uniforms as they do for weekly chapel. Guests are welcome to dress however they would like to, and most choose “business casual” attire.

Lovefeasts for the 2024-25 School Year:
  • September 20: Fall Lovefeast for Families, Alumni, and Friends of the School
  • November 26: Thanksgiving Lovefeast for Grandparents and Other VIPs
    • All grandparents are welcome, even if your family has 4.
    •  The service will be live-streamed for grandparents who live far away.
    • Students are welcome to bring another adult if a grandparent is not available.
    • There will also be a special chapel on the Merle-Smith Campus on Monday, November 25. for the grandparents of our Upper School students.
  • February 26: Spring Lovefeast for Parents, Guardians and Caregivers
    • Due to limited space in our classrooms, if your family has more than two parents, please consider the Fall Lovefeast as an additional option for attendance.
The Moravian Academy Birthday Lovefeast will occur on April 30 for the Historic Downtown and Merle-Smith Campuses students. Our students, faculty, and staff fill the space in the Church for this event, but there are a few spaces in the balcony for parents who would like to attend. The service is also livestreamed and recorded for anyone in our community to enjoy virtually.

Thank you for being a Creator of Community, and we look forward to seeing you on September 20!
