Building Connections at the Swain Campus: How 'Relationship Mapping' Strengthens Our Community

Swain Campus faculty and staff spent a faculty meeting participating in a powerful exercise called "Relationship Mapping," developed by the "Making Caring Common" project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

This activity helps us visualize the connections between our students and the adults in our school. By creating a map of these relationships, we gain valuable insights into the social dynamics at play and identify students who may benefit from additional support in building meaningful connections.

Our next step is to carefully review the data collected during the "Relationship Mapping" exercise. This will allow us to identify students who may need additional support in forming connections with adults on our campus. We will then work together to develop a plan to ensure that every member of our community feels seen, connected, and supported through strong adult connections.

Research shows that positive relationships with caring adults are essential for students' academic success, social-emotional well-being, and overall development. When students feel seen, heard, and connected, they thrive in all aspects of their lives.

The "Relationship Mapping" exercise reinforces this year’s school-wide theme, "Creators of Community." By nurturing strong relationships and ensuring that every student feels a sense of belonging, we are actively creating a caring and inclusive environment where everyone can flourish.
This initiative will help us ensure that every student on our campus has a strong network of supportive adults at school, which will facilitate:
  • Increased academic engagement and success: Students who feel connected to their teachers and other adults at school are more likely to be engaged in learning and achieve their academic goals.
  • Improved social-emotional well-being: Strong relationships foster a sense of belonging, security, and self-worth, which are essential for students' social-emotional development.
  • A more positive and inclusive school climate: By prioritizing relationships, we create a school environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and supported.
We are incredibly grateful to our dedicated faculty and staff for their enthusiastic participation in this important activity. Together, we are creating a web of support that will empower our students to reach their full potential. We are committed to providing every student with the support they need to thrive. The "Relationship Mapping" exercise is just one example of our ongoing efforts to create a school community where every child feels seen, connected, and cared for.
