“Today’s students are fortunate. Moravian Academy develops lifelong habits for success. Focus on strengths which will lead you to mastery of a subject,” advises Dr. Bryon Viechnicki ’01. Dr. Viechnicki heeds his own advice, because at just 30 years old, he is a leader in the orthodontic profession.
Dr. Viechnicki was deeply influenced by the teachers at Moravian Academy. “They were persistent, caring, and invested in me. He feels that he has earned the “highest academic honor,” the privilege to train future generations of orthodontists. As a professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Temple University, he lectures on current clinical orthodontic topics, assists orthodontic residents in their preparation for board certification, and advises residents in research on craniofacial growth and development.
Dr. Viechnicki has published seven articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has published two book chapters and has presented his research nationally. In 2012 and 2013, he was named USA Top Dentist – Orthodontic Specialist, and Select Orthodontist from Lehigh Valley Style magazine, as voted by area dentists.
Last summer, Dr. Viechnicki received the Pennsylvania Association of Orthodontists’ David C. Hamilton Orthodontic Research Award for his contributions in advancing the understanding of adolescent jaw growth. “By doing research in orthodontics, I hope to pay respect to all of the people who have made my profession what it is today,” he says.
He was chosen by the Board of Trustees of the American Association of Orthodontists as a Young Leader in Orthodontics and was inducted into the Society of Orthodontic Educators. As a result, he was invited to present at the “Shaping a Vision of the Profession” conference in Palm Desert, California this February. He was asked to discuss the issue of access to specialist-level orthodontic care in the United States.
