Mr. Carlton P. "Joe" Chandler
It wasn’t easy, but when former Head of the Upper School Joe Chandler retired in 2010, he promised himself that he wouldn’t “hang around the school” for at least six months.
Sure, he wanted to be available for any needed advice or help as the Academy moved forward, but he wanted to show the school community that he was ready to embrace his first break from working in an independent school in more than 40 years.
The first year away was difficult, he admits, as he missed the stimulation of daily interaction with students that was so much a part of his 15 years at Moravian. Attending the occasional coffeehouse, playoff game, and musical became an easy way to stay involved during this transition.
Three years into his retirement and he’s a more frequent visitor, sitting in the audience of much-loved events, as well as catching up with faculty over lunch while “trying not to make a nuisance of myself,” he jokes.
Mr. Chandler’s reputation remains that of a supportive figure with an unrelenting willingness to help. “I always had in the back of my mind that my job was to facilitate the work of the faculty that were so capable and dedicated, and to make it easier for them to do their job, removing as many roadblocks as possible along the way,” he explains.
One of the hallmarks of the Academy, Mr. Chandler remarks, is the student/teacher relationship, and he admires the “teachers’ creativity and initiative to reach students of a variety of abilities and skills effectively, while undertaking the challenge of responding to today’s technology.”
Combine that with a student body that he has regarded through the years for the importance they place on learning and respect for each other’s learning, and he’s proud to join the honorary ranks of Moravian Academy alumni, he says. “I was pleasantly surprised when Headmaster George N. King, Jr. gave me the call. It is a true honor to be selected and to stay connected to Moravian in a more official way.”
