Dr. and Mrs. Peter Puleo

Ask Dr. Peter Puleo and his wife, Robin, to explain what Moravian Academy means to them and they will likely point to the accomplishments of their three sons.

Oldest son Christopher ’07 is following in his father’s footsteps amid his third year of medical school, John ’09 just started his dream job at a civil engineering firm in Manhattan, and youngest son Peter ’12 is about to begin his junior year at Bucknell University where he is working toward a dual degree in management and mechanical engineering.

“Moravian provided the foundation for them to be launched into careers and further their education where they’re really challenged and rewarded each day,” Mrs. Puleo explained. “It’s just so rewarding as a mom to see your kids pursuing careers that they are passionate about and feel accomplished and able to take on the challenges.”

It’s exactly the kind of outcome Mrs. Puleo had hoped for when she and her husband chose Bethlehem as their home base 15 years ago. Dr. Puleo, a cardiologist, was looking to advance his career when the opportunity arose to join a cardiology group within St. Luke’s Hospital.

As Dr. Puleo trained at hospitals in Houston, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati, Mrs. Puleo had grown adept at transitioning her sons into new schools. While there were other offers for Dr. Puleo to consider, his wife had one requirement, “to live in a city where there was a wonderful school for the kids,” she said.

What struck Mrs. Puleo most about Moravian Academy, she recalled, were the teachers’ involvement with their students, small class sizes, and an overall warm feeling of friendliness. “They emphasized values and morals, and being a good person while becoming educated.”

Volunteering and helping out as a class mom, Mrs. Puleo observed how the school became like a second home for her children. For Dr. Puleo, watching not only his sons but their friends grow and mature through the years was something he came to understand as a trademark of the institution. Joining the Board of Trustees in 2005 elevated his awareness of this transformation even more, he explained.

“My time on the Board was very instructive because we had exit interviews with the seniors and you get to see the engineering of how they come in and how they come out—enthusiastic and passionate, and ready to take on the world. I could see that it wasn’t just my kids who have chosen good friends, but all the kids were like that.”

Learning the news that they will now join the alumni ranks alongside their sons was an unexpected and enjoyable surprise for them both. “It’s an incredible honor to be given this distinction,” Dr. Puleo said. Adds Mrs. Puleo, “I’m absolutely surprised and so honored because I was enough of a ‘Helicopter Mom’ to know what was involved on a day-to-day basis in getting that diploma, and to become alumni in this way we honestly took the easier path!”
