Ceramics Students Draw Inspiration from Visiting Artist Karen Mattice

On Friday, November 15, ceramics students on our Merle-Smith Campus had the exciting opportunity to learn from visiting artist Karen Mattice, a seasoned ceramics professional with over four decades of experience. Karen shared her expertise through live demonstrations, showcasing her techniques for throwing and trimming on the wheel. Students, many of whom will soon embark on wheel work for the first time, eagerly took notes, asked questions, and explored Karen’s finished pieces.

Karen, originally from Catskills, NY and now residing in Pennsylvania, began her pottery journey in 1981. After discovering her love for clay in high school and earning a degree in art and education, she eventually established her own studio, where she creates and sells pottery at shows and fairs in Pennsylvania and New York. Teaching students aged 6 to 76, Karen finds joy in sharing her passion for pottery while balancing the creative and business sides of her work.

During her visit, Karen not only demonstrated her craft but also gave students insight into the business of art. She discussed identifying markets, balancing personal creativity with market demands, and managing the logistics of running an art business. This behind-the-scenes perspective helped students connect the practical aspects of being a professional artist with their own growing skills and aspirations.

The visit aligned with the class’s goal of exposing students to a variety of artistic approaches and professional practices. By meeting artists like Karen and engaging in monthly "Inspiration Artists" assignments, students build a broad foundation of knowledge and inspiration. These experiences encourage students to reflect on the art they admire and connect with, fostering a deeper understanding of their own creative paths.
