4th Graders Celebrate “Love That Dog” with Graffiti Walls

Beth Matlock
On our Historic Downtown Campus, fourth-grade students in Beth Matlock's class turned their literary analysis into creative masterpieces as they concluded their study of Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. The activity centered on creating individual and class graffiti walls in response to the prompt: Write all the words you can think of that describe a person with a figurative great heart.

Students collaborated to brainstorm words inspired by the novel’s characters, which they used to design a vibrant classroom graffiti wall. Each student also created a personalized version in their Wit and Wisdom binders, while the class worked together on a collective masterpiece.

When reflecting on their favorite part of the project, students shared:
  • “It was fun drawing a new style. I drew bubble letters!”
  • “I loved the novel so much; I always want to talk about it!”
  • “I liked seeing other ways people drew. It was fun being inspired by others and their styles!”
This creative activity brought the novel to life, encouraging students to expand their vocabulary and express their ideas in imaginative ways. It served as a reminder that exploring synonyms, examples, quotations, and sayings is key to precise and effective writing.
