Celebrating Cultural Traditions: Nowruz and Ramadan at Swain Campus
Heather Manning
The Swain Campus recently had the privilege of welcoming two distinguished presenters who enriched our students' understanding of cultural traditions.
Dr. Sima Hodavance introduced our preschool through 5th-grade students to the customs of Nowruz, the Persian New Year. As part of the celebration, students participated in the symbolic tradition of jumping over a mock "fire," an activity believed to burn away negativity and welcome a fresh start. This interactive experience provided students with a deeper appreciation of the rich history and significance of Nowruz.
Ms. Hana Siddiqi provided an insightful presentation on the traditions of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr, explaining the importance of fasting, reflection, and charity during this sacred time. Students also had the opportunity to sample a date, a traditional food used to break the fast. Additionally, they learned customary greetings, such as “Ramadan Mubarak” for those observing the fast and “Eid Kareem” or “Happy Eid” for celebrating Eid.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Hodavance and Ms. Siddiqi for bringing these meaningful traditions to life and helping our students cultivate a greater appreciation for the diverse cultures of the world.
