Bringing Shakespeare to Life: Upper School Students Shine at PSF Competition
Catherine Moore & Brooke Harrsch
Over Spring Break, three Upper School students competed in Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival’s (PSF) annual Student Competition at DeSales University which brought together high school students from across the region for an inspiring day of performance and artistic growth. The event, part of PSF’s Linny Fowler WillPower Education Programs, celebrated the timeless works of William Shakespeare while empowering young participants to develop their skills in language, acting, and creativity. Colin Moore '25, Nathaniel Schmidt '26, and Summer Strom '27 showcased their talents through their chosen speeches from Othello, Richard II, and Macbeth, respectively, and were evaluated by working theatre professionals in three rounds of auditions. This unique opportunity allowed participants to receive insightful critiques, hone their craft, and observe the artistry of their peers. The day also featured a variety of workshops and panel discussions led by industry experts, covering topics such as language and movement, intimacy work, theatre careers, and college theatre programs. Students left with invaluable knowledge and inspiration to fuel their passion for the performing arts.
At the end of the day, standout performers were selected to participate in the Showcase, which highlighted exceptional pieces for all attendees to enjoy. Nathaniel represented MA in the Showcase with his King Richard speech from Richard II!
The day was a vibrant celebration of artistry, connection, and the transformative power of Shakespeare, and we can’t wait for next year’s Student Competition!
