Upper School Robotics Team “The Dark Byte” Competes in FIRST Robotics Competition

Our Upper School FRC Robotics team, The Dark Byte, recently showcased their engineering and teamwork skills at Montgomery High School in Skillman, NJ. Competing against 31 teams from across New Jersey, our students put their meticulously designed robot, LePrawn Momoa, to the test in this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition challenge: "Reefscape."
The competition, part of the FIRST Dive theme, required robots to clear “algae” (large yoga balls) from a reef structure and place “coral” (PVC pipe) onto the reef. Across 12 qualification matches, The Dark Byte’s robot demonstrated its capabilities, operating autonomously for 15 seconds before students took control using video game controllers for the remaining 2 minutes and 15 seconds.
Built over 10 weeks, LePrawn Momoa boasts a two-stage elevator, 14 motors, dual intake mechanisms, and a swerve drive—elements that helped the team secure a 16th-place ranking out of 32 teams. Advancing into the playoff bracket as part of Alliance #4, alongside Morris County School of Technology and North Brunswick Township High School, the team battled through intense matches before being defeated in the quarterfinals.
This competition was not just about robotics but about problem-solving, collaboration, and resilience—hallmarks of the Moravian Academy experience. Congratulations to all the students who participated for their dedication and hard work!
