Uncovering the Past: Hands-On History Students Explore Moravian Academy’s Archives

Rachel Engl
On Friday, Upper School students in Dr. Rachel Engl's Hands-On History class had the wonderful opportunity to visit our own school's archives housed on the 4th floor of the attic in Snyder House. Ms. Judy Gemmel, the school's archivist, had developed an amazing activity pulling from a variety of sources from the archives that examined how Moravian Prep, Moravian Seminary, and the Swain School, the schools that we know today as part of Moravian Academy responded to the challenges and opportunities in the years following the end of World War II.

This rich experience prompted students to delve into records, newspaper clippings, and school publications to develop conclusions about how the schools' leaders sought to respond to the rising demand for education caused by the GI Bill and the Baby Boom. In addition, students were able to browse the archives and take a look back at their yearbooks for students who were here for lower school!

This hands-on experience brought our mission to life, inspiring students to learn from the past as they prepare to lead with curiosity and purpose. By exploring our rich history, they deepen their understanding of the legacy they will carry forward.
