Building Connections Through History: 2nd Graders Visit Merle-Smith
Yuli Vanegas
Our second graders had an exciting visit to the Merle-Smith Campus on Friday! They kicked off the day with a lively game of Are You Smarter Than a 2nd Grader? during Chapel—a fun and engaging way to showcase their recent history unit on Moravian and Moravian Academy history. Six teams, each pairing a second grader with an Upper School student participant, competed in the challenge, with the second graders serving as their Moravian History experts. If their Upper School participant didn’t know an answer, they could turn to their knowledgeable second-grade teammate or 2nd grade class, highlighting the strong connections between our youngest and oldest learners.
The learning continued as Katherine Burd's World History I students introduced our second graders to Buddhism and Shinto, giving them an early glimpse into world religions. Our 2nd grade Spanish Immersion students also met with Melika Matlack’s Historia Mundial I class, where ninth graders—many of whom are former SIP students—interviewed the second graders and worked together to create a timeline. They also played games and answered trivia questions, making for a fun and collaborative learning experience.
This special day of cross-campus connections and hands-on learning truly showcased the vibrant and supportive community that makes Moravian Academy so unique!
