Interdisciplinary Adventures Spark Creativity and Curiosity for Sixth Graders

JoAnne Daniels & Nathan Diehl
Sixth-grade students at Moravian Academy recently immersed themselves in dynamic interdisciplinary learning experiences that seamlessly blended art, science, and music.

Their day began with an inspiring field trip to the Allentown Symphony at Miller Symphony Hall, where the orchestra’s program explored the concept of balance—both in musical orchestration and in nature. Students discovered how harmony in music mirrors the delicate equilibrium within ecosystems, reinforcing concepts from their ongoing studies in ecology. This meaningful connection brought scientific principles to life through artistic expression, deepening their understanding of balance in both sound and the natural world.

The excitement continued with a special virtual visit from Tom Klinkowstein, a design artist and professor at Pratt Institute and Hofstra University—and the brother of sixth-grade teacher Mrs. Daniels. Klinkowstein shared his lifelong fascination with space exploration, offering students a glimpse into his personal journey through captivating stories, artwork, and photographs. His passion for space will soon reach new heights when he fulfills his dream of embarking on a suborbital flight with Virgin Galactic in 2027.

Inspired by his experiences, students took on a creative challenge to design a paper triptych exploring space as a place, a persona, and an idea. Klinkowstein plans to reconnect with the students in April to discuss their creations—and even hopes to carry reproductions of their artwork with him on his upcoming journey into space. This extraordinary opportunity has ignited imaginations and broadened horizons, blending science, art, and innovation in a truly unforgettable way.
