Second grade students have recently wrapped up a math unit on graphs with a sweet twist—by opening their very own donut shops! Students dove into learning about different types of graphs: bar graphs, line plots, picture graphs, tally charts, and table graphs. But it wasn’t just about theory—they took their new skills out for a test drive in a fun and interactive way.
The classroom was transformed into a bustling donut shop, complete with hats, name tags, and tickets to make every student feel like an official donut shop owner. At the heart of this hands-on learning experience, students received an empty box of donuts. Their mission? To fill the box by completing graphing activities at ten different stations around the shop.
Each station challenged the students with new types of graphs and questions, testing their ability to interpret data and create their own graphs. When students answered correctly, teachers rewarded them with a donut for their box. And the best part? When they filled their box with all ten donuts, they were officially running a successful shop!
To cap off the day, each student received a certificate of achievement and, of course, a sweet treat—Mary Ann donuts to celebrate their hard work.
This fun, hands-on experience showed just how exciting learning can be when it’s connected to real-world activities. Second graders not only mastered graphing but did so in the most delicious way possible!
