Information for Teachers

Lehigh Valley Summerbridge (LVS) is a free, non-profit enrichment education program designed to assist predominantly low-income students from nine different middle schools in the Lehigh Valley in their quest to become a college student. These students, comprised of both genders, a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds, and multilingual speakers are likely to be first-generation college attendees and graduates. Rising seventh-grade students voluntarily apply to the program; their applications are reviewed during a rigorous screening process and, once accepted, students commit to two full years in the program. Accepted students attend two 6-week summer programs—one prior to seventh grade and one prior to eighth grade—as well as once-a-week tutoring sessions during both school years.
What We Do For Our Teachers
At Summerbridge, our teachers build their teaching skills while they grow personally and professionally. We give aspiring teachers the chance to manage their own classroom filled with incredible students who hope to attend college one day. Getting to teach full-time for 6 weeks is a special opportunity for teachers to gain experience in the classroom prior to student teaching or before starting a first teaching job. At Summerbridge, we celebrate each teacher and student for exactly who they are to make for a fun, constructive, and invaluable experience.
We provide our teachers with a variety of valuable experiences throughout the summer:
  • Design and implement a 6-week unit plan for one core class (science, literature, math, or writing) within the loose boundaries of the Summerbridge curriculum.
  • Receive feedback on all lesson plans before they are implemented.
  • Manage a classroom.
  • Co-teach one elective that the teachers create. Examples of some electives from this past summer include film, health and fitness, the craft of acting, Greek mythology, and more.
  • Co-teach one club that the teachers create. Examples of some electives from this past summer include dance, art, forensics, music, and more.
  • Teach small classes of 10-15 middle school students.
  • Work in a team-teaching setting.
  • Observations by master teachers
  • Master teachers will observe lessons and provide meaningful feedback to each teacher so they can continue improving their teaching skills.
  • Organize an intensive 1-week orientation program prior to the students arriving:
  • Each teacher will participate in workshops that focus on lesson planning, classroom management, and professionalism.
  • Past Summerbridge teachers will visit to discuss their first-year teaching experiences and the job hunt.
  • Housing for teachers who require it.
  • Teachers are paid a $2,000 stipend

  • Our Students

For many students in the Easton, Allentown, and Bethlehem school districts, a lack of resources means that college is not an option. The 80-100 students enrolled in this program each year, while generally lacking resources, demonstrate academic potential and recognize the importance of education and its potential to improve the quality of their lives.

Summerbridge students make a significant sacrifice to attend this program. While many of their peers are enjoying time off of school and summertime activities, Summerbridge students are attending math, science, literature, writing, and social studies classes. They are painting, taking photographs, performing dances and plays, they are performing experiments, they are doing homework. Many students ride the bus an hour each way in order to attend. These students, quite simply, are amazing.
  • Our Teachers

All LVS teachers are enrolled in college degree programs or have just graduated. Most of our teachers are education majors and plan to go on to teach professionally. Teachers will team teach, co-teach an elective, and teach their own core subject classes for two 45-minute periods each day. Throughout the summer, we assist teachers in the unit and lesson planning process and encourage our teachers to plan creative and differentiated lessons. We also encourage our teachers to take students on educational field trips and to bring in guest speakers.

Students are organized into core teams that have four teachers and approximately 20 students. Each core team is comprised of a math, science, literature, and writing or college prep/life skills teacher. Students rotate through core subject courses in the morning. Following lunch, students take an elective, have homework time, and attend a club.

Teachers submit weekly core subject lesson plans for critique and are observed throughout the summer by the program directors, a master teacher (a veteran teacher from the Lehigh Valley), and a veteran LVS teacher. Teachers also join a planning committee for Celebration, Olympics, special events, and college field trips.

In the recent past, our staff has come to us by way of: Lehigh University, Moravian College, Kutztown University, Cedar Crest College, Muhlenberg College, Northampton Community College, Marywood University, Penn State University, Temple University, Tufts University, Lock Haven University, West Chester University, Columbia University, Saint Mary's College, Coastal Carolina University, University of Pennsylvania, Delaware Valley College, Connecticut College, Ursinus College, Wellesley College, and Saint Joseph’s University.
