Second Graders Explore Communities Through Project-Based Learning
Karin Reger, Second Grade Teacher
At Moravian Academy, project-based learning on the Swain Campus transforms curiosity into hands-on discovery. Our second graders recently immersed themselves in an engaging social studies project to explore the three types of communities: urban, suburban, and rural.
Students began by researching their assigned community type, sharing insights with peers, and sketching out initial designs. They then worked collaboratively to build their communities using recyclable materials—a process that encouraged critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork.
Maxwell Covington reflected on the experience: “I enjoyed using recyclable materials and creating buildings for my suburban community.”
Rella Smith added: “My favorite part was gathering materials and sharing my community with my mom.”
The project culminated in a joyful presentation to fifth-grade buddies and families, where students proudly shared their hard work and learning. This project exemplifies how Moravian Academy uses project-based learning to inspire curiosity, foster collaboration, and empower students to connect with the world—and each other.
