Eighth Graders Experience A Raisin in the Sun Live on Stage

Laura Riker
The HDC eighth grade class had a remarkable opportunity to deepen their understanding of literature and history with a trip to see Lorraine Hansberry’s iconic play, A Raisin in the Sun, at People's Light theater in Malvern, PA. This powerful production served as a companion piece to The Piano Lesson by August Wilson, a play they study each year, allowing students to draw meaningful comparisons and contrasts between the two works.

Beyond literature, the experience tied into their Civil Rights unit in Social Studies and built upon their earlier visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C. To further enrich their understanding, a teaching artist conducted a workshop with the students before the trip, ensuring they were fully prepared to engage with this significant piece of American theater.

By immersing themselves in this live performance, students gained a deeper appreciation for the themes, history, and artistic expression that continue to shape our cultural landscape.
